A beautiful video on Sufism, its origins and context, by the acclaimed author, William Dalrymple. It contains a description of the meaning of the sema of the whirling dervishes and focuses on the power and transformative effect of music. This is a very informative video and a treat to watch.

“A few years ago, Jewish storyteller Audrey Galex, of Atlanta, was looking for a Muslim partner for a storytelling project, so she called Soumaya Khalifa, founder and Executive Director of the Islamic Speakers Bureau in Atlanta.”
This is a heartening article about a group of Jewish and Muslim women who meet regularly to bake together and to to discover the similarities in their faith and their lives. Very encouraging.
Of course, baking together is only one part of the goal. “To get to know each other, break down stereotypes and grow that circle of people in a grassroots effort,” explained Soumaya of the group’s aims.
Like Audrey, Soumaya seeks to create cross-cultural awareness and tolerance. Conducting diversity-training classes is part of Soumaya’s human resources job at Georgia Pacific. As executive director of the Islamic Speakers Bureau-Atlanta, she oversees and does outreach to schools, religious institutions, companies and groups to educate about Islam and Muslims.
|
Aicha also acknowledged the power of groups, such as the baking circle: “Interfaith contact is really needed to remove the walls that develop in the hearts of people, through the media and stereotypes. Stereotypes become words and images and leave humanity out of it. When people get to know each other, there is a lot more understanding and problem-solving.”

I don’t know a great deal about the Muslim community in South Africa but I have just watched this video and found it very informational and fascinating. The video listens to several women from diverse backgrounds about their lives as Muslims and the activities they pursue. It is 30 minutes long which gives the chance to hear many voices.
I apologise for the problem with the video. Until I have managed to rectify it here is the link for the video on youtube

This is the other perfume website I said I would let you know about. Rita is based in London and is offering perfume tours around London. She has extensive kknowledge of the history and nature of scents and the accompanying blog to this website has many fascinating articles about perfume, pheromones, and the sense of smell.
An exotic journey discovering the scents of the orient and perfumeries in a village atmosphere in central London
A traditional, gentrified voyage exploring the fragrant hidden side of Mayfair.
Smell luxurious and bespoke scents from around the world, gathered into a fragrant poesie in Knightsbridge.
A guided tour of London’s niche fragrance shops. Enjoy choosing a new fragrance on this shopping adventure.
